“The Marvels” failed to pull fans in, making just $47m in its first weekend at US cinemas.
This makes it the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lowest opening.
Starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris, “The Marvels” is a sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel”.
According to BBC News, analyst David A Gross said, “This opening is an unprecedented Marvel box office collapse”.
He also pointed out that the movie has some way to go to recoup its $220m production cost.
“The Marvels” sees Captain Marvel trying to rescue a destabilised universe with the help of Ms Marvel, played by Vellani and Captain Monica Rambeau, played by Parris.
Despite its poor showing when compared to other MCU projects, “The Marvels” were at the top of the US box office chart.
Second was the horror movie “Five Nights at Freddy’s”, and third was “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”.
