Officials in Tobago are warning that the Portuguese Man-O’ War has been spotted at beaches around the island.
The THA’s Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development says the man-o’ war is sometimes mistaken for a jellyfish.
However, it warns that its sting can be more severe than a jellyfish.
The man-o’ war is characterized by its purple-blue, bubble-like float visible on the water’s surface, nearly invisible tentacles and a tendency to drift close to shore.
Persons are being urged to observe the water before entering and wear protective swimwear.
If stung, persons are advised to exit the water immediately, remove the tentacles with a stick or towel, rinse with seawater, apply vinegar liberally and seek immediate medical attention.
Medical attention is essential for severe pain, difficulty breathing, chest pain, allergic reactions or stings affecting a large area.
