Suspect wanted in U.S. loses his extradition appeal

The Appeal Court has rejected an appeal by Shurlan Guppy and refused a conditional stay of his extradition.

The 47-year-old is wanted in the U.S. on 11 charges related to heroin and cocaine trafficking.

Delivered by Justices of Appeal Mark Mohammed, Peter Rajkumar, and Ronnie Boodoosingh, the ruling rejected Guppy’s claims of entrapment, bad faith, and undue interference with his constitutional right to family life, concluding that there were no exceptional circumstances to bar his extradition.

In a statement, the Office of the Attorney General said the outcome removes the penultimate legal obstacle to Guppy’s extradition to the United States.

It adds, “Moreover, this decision highlights the robust partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States in the ongoing fight against international drug trafficking.”
