Suriname’s Foreign Minister is the first Caribbean leader to head the OAS

Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin has been elected as the new Secretary General of the Organisation of American States for the 2025 – 2030 term.

Secretary General Elect Ramdin who will become the first Caribbean leader to head the organization, addressed the OAS General Assembly yesterday.

He called for greater regional unity, sustainable development and climate change action for Caribbean nations which are exposed to worsening natural disasters.

US State Secretary Marco Rubio said he anticipates working with the new Secretary General to uphold the OAS’s core mission of defending democracy, promoting and protecting human rights and advancing security and economic prosperity through the region.
