Suga starts mandatory military service

BTS member Suga has begun his mandatory military service for South Korea.

The singer, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, is the third member of the band to enlist, after Jin and J-Hope.

He confirmed the start of his service on social media, saying “I will faithfully complete my duty and come back.”

South Korea is technically still at war with North Korea and all able-bodied men are required to serve in the army by the time they turn 28.

Exceptions are sometimes made however last October, all seven BTS members announced that they were all planning to enlist.

Jin, as the oldest, was first – he began his service in December 2022 and was assigned to a front-line boot camp.

However, according to BBC News, Suga has been “ruled unfit for the regular combat duty and will serve as a social service agent”.

South Korean media say this is likely due to a shoulder surgery that he required in 2020.
