The family of Komal Maharaj has issued a statement saying a ransom was paid for his release.

In the statement, they say he was taken against his will after withdrawing money from an ATM in Price Plaza on July 19th.

He was subsequently taken to Venezuela, where he was able to communicate with his family, under the watchful eyes of his captors.

The statement goes on to say that Maharaj’s release was negotiated under the guidance of the TTPS, resulting in his release.

After an undisclosed sum was paid, he was dropped off at sea close to the south western peninsula.

According to the statement, Maharaj then swam to shore and found his way to a shop in Chatham, where he contacted his wife.

His family says details of the entire ordeal cannot be provided at this time, but thanked persons for their prayers and support.
