Irish singer and activist Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.
Her death comes over a year after her 17-year-old son Shane took his own life in January 2022.
A statement from her family says, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor was best known for her 1990 single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ which went on to hit number one around the world.
She was also very outspoken in her social and political views, and famously used her performance during a 1992 episode of “Saturday Night Live!” to highlight allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church.
In 2018 she converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat.
However she reportedly continued to record and perform under her birth name.
