Shamar Joseph stars on West Indies Test debut

Guyana fast bowler Shamar Joseph was a highlight for West Indies on day one of the first Test against Australia, as he removed Steve Smith with his first ball in Test cricket.

Before his exploits with the ball, Joseph made 36 as part of a 55-run 10th-wicket partnership with Kemar Roach, as West Indies were bowled out for 188.

Kirk McKenzie top scored with 50.

24-year-old Joseph then came into the bowling attack for the 9th over of Australia’s first innings and, after shaking off some nerves, bowled his first ball in Tests just outside off stump on a good length.

Smith, who had up to that point faced 25 balls for 12 runs, was drawn into playing and was caught at third slip by fellow debutant Justin Greaves.

Joseph went on to take the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne as well a few overs later, as Australia got to stumps at 59/2 – trailing by 129 runs.

Speaking after the day’s play, Joseph said, “Getting Steve Smith’s wicket is just amazing for me.”

“I had a few conversations with the boys in the dressing room and I told them I would get a wicket on my first ball – but I didn’t know was (sic) Steve Smith”, he laughed.

Day two starts around 7:30pm T&T time.
