Robert Downey Jr will return to the MCU to play Dr Doom.

The announcement came as the Marvel legend made a surprise return during the studio’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.

Avengers 5 was previously titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” but that was scrapped due to ongoing legal issues for Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror.

Avengers 5 will now be titled “Avengers: Doomsday”, with Downey to star as the villainous masked mastermind.

“Avengers: Doomsday” will kick off the end of the MCU’s Pahse 6 in May 2026, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” in May 2027.
