Rio Claro residents challenge TTPS crime stats in area

Rio Claro police say they are solving 8 out of every 10 serious crimes, such as murders, robbery, larceny and narcotic offences, reported within their district. However residents have challenged these statistics.

At a town meeting, Inspector Rishi Ragbir said for the year until September 30th, there were 75 serious reported crimes, down from 123 reported in the same period last year.

Some of the residents questioned whether there was a possibility of underreporting due to a lack of police trust and confidence.

The resident spoke about issues of gang activity, poor customer service, indiscriminate parking and police escorts, praedial larceny, noise pollution and home invasions in the area.

In response, Inspector Ragbir said in addition to officers being trained in customer service, traffic police within key areas have already positively impacted the commuting woes.

He said though the issue of praedial larceny remains a priority, the community has a role to assist the police in capturing offenders due to the remote locations of some farms.

Inspector Ragbir also said anyone dissatisfied with their local police can report the matter, either to his office or anonymously through 555 or 800-TIPS.
