Regional body demands France to pay reparations to Haiti

The Assembly of Caribbean People has made an appeal to France to pay reparations and restitutions to the people of Haiti, as it delivered a declaration to the French Embassy this morning.

The declaration was delivered on the 200th anniversary of France demanding that Haiti pay compensations for winning its independence in 1804.

At this morning’s gathering, Assembly member David Abdullah said France should repay the sum in full, since it owed Haiti for years of neglect and pressure.

It estimates the repayment to be a minimum US$150bn, adding that the total payment should be determined by the people of Haiti.
