President Trump closes duty free loophole, expect Shein & Temu price hike

US President Donald Trump has a closed a duty-free loophole for low-value packages, increasing prices for US customers of Chinese retailers like Shein and Temu.

The so-called “de minimis” exemption, which applied to parcels worth less than $800US, was used by the Chinese retail giants to sell and ship low-value items directly to the US, without having to pay duties or import taxes.

But both Mr Trump and his predecessor, Joe Biden, said it damaged American businesses and was used to smuggle illegal goods, including drugs.
