Imported items are taking an average of three weeks to be cleared off the Ports by Customs, and this is causing financial hardship to many businesses.

The Couva Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce says while it understands the importance of the checks to eradicate illegal activities, the slowdown is causing issues in this busy Christmas period.

It is costing importers increased rent and demurrage charges, both sunk costs which cannot be recouped.

The Chamber believes the effects of the slowdown will contribute to an increase in inflation.

In addition to the businesses being directly affected, transport trailers are also being tied up, which could also affect transportation rates.
