Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says the Central Government is committed to addressing the oil spill in Tobago.
Today, Dr Rowley toured the impacted sites in the south western part of the island, along with a ministerial team, THA officials and other personnel.
At a media conference after, he said as long as the vessel continues to spill oil, operations will continue to focus on containment, with cleanup to follow only when the situation is under control.
He added that they are working in the context of a 2013 Oil Spill Contingency Plan and that everything that needs to be done, has been and is being done.
This includes efforts by companies that operate in the local hydrocarbon sector.
The PM also revealed that T&T has been offered help by friendly nations, with discussions in that regard being led by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
As for the vessel spilling the oil, there is still no official word on its origin or identity.
There were questions from reporters as well as to whether it could have been spotted and dealt with earlier, had there been a proper Coast Guard presence in Tobago.
Dr Rowley believes this is speculative, but admitted that there is need to improve the Coast Guard fleet.
