Prime Minister Stuart Young says he will write to the Carter Centre requesting observers for next month’s General Election.
The US-based NGO has a Democracy Program which works globally to support democratic elections and has so far deployed 125 full and limited observation missions around the world.
Mr Young told today’s post cabinet briefing that this will be in addition to a request for observers from the Commonwealth, as well as a confirmed CARICOM observer team.
He also took issue with the Opposition Leader’s claim of a conflict of interest with regard to the CARICOM team.
In a statement yesterday, Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar cited the fact that the Assistant Secretary-General of CARICOM, Elizabeth Solomon, is the wife of former Attorney General, Reginald Armour.
The call for international observers was reiterated yesterday by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar in a letter to Mr Young.
Today the call was echoed by COP People Leader Prakash Ramadhar, who believes it will allow for transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
He adds that it would be important to the outcome of the election especially if results are to be queried.
