PM defends new electricity rates, says persons will be shown the real cost

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has defended the electricity rate increase outlined recently, saying it is necessary if T&TEC is to keep operating properly.

Dr Rowley was asked about the prices during today’s Post Cabinet briefing.

The Prime Minister also insisted that there will still be a significant subsidy.

He even stated that the Public Utilities Minister will be instructed to find a way to show the public the actual cost of electricity.

Regulated Industries Commission recently outlined the new rates, however these will not be implemented until and unless approved by T&TEC.

The rates are the maximum that T&TEC can charge customers for electricity.

Dr Rowley also commented on the upcoming enforcement of the Property Tax, amid concerns of a possible increase in rents.
