Pan Trinbago has announced the revival of the South/Central Pan Champs event.
The event returns after a nineteen-year hiatus and has been renamed in honour of the late Ken ‘Professor’ Philmore.
16 bands have qualified to participate based on merit received during the preliminary round of the Panorama 2024 Competition.
There are two categories: Single Pan Bands and Conventional Bands.
The event is carded for February 8th at Skinner Park, San Fernando.
Pan Trinbago also paid tribute to Mr Philmore, describing him as a pioneer and visionary.
It says, “His passion for the instrument fuelled a remarkable journey dedicated to excellence and innovation. From a young age, Philmore’s affinity for the Steelpan was evident, receiving his first tenor pan at nine years old. Through dedication and immersion in the panyards, he earned the name ‘Professor’ for his iconic appearance with oversized round glasses. More than just a musician, Ken ‘Professor’ Philmore embodied the spirit of a servant leader, showcasing the versatility of the Steelpan and its ability to transcend musical boundaries. As the first Professor of Pan, he exemplified Trinidad and Tobago’s rich musical heritage and served as a global ambassador for the instrument.”
