Palestinian journalist: the international community has failed Gaza

A Palestinian journalist believes the international community has failed Gaza and its people.

The enclave continues to come under attack from Israeli forces, with the flow of aid also being restricted.

Speaking with 103.1FM News this morning, Yousef Alhelou said while the situation has been highlighted, countries have failed to intervene.

For Mr Alhelou, there is anger and anguish as he sees his childhood city destroyed.

He has also been directly affected: he lost his sister and her seven children to a strike on their home on December 10th 2023, while dozens of other relatives are among tens of thousands killed since October 2023.

Media colleagues were lost as well, with Mr Alhelou criticizing the silence of western media even as their counterparts fall.

Mr Alhelou is currently in Trinidad to support his documentary titled “The Phoenix of Gaza.”

He began filming in mid-2023.

It was meant to focus on life in a city that has been under decades of occupation and hardship.

It went on to become much more than that.

“The Phoenix of Gaza” was screened at the Central Bank Auditorium in T&T on June 1st 2025.

It has already won four awards – for Best Documentary Film and Best Director – at two film festivals in Italy and the UK.

Mr Alhelou considers this a “love letter” to his childhood home and has vowed to continue covering the situation in Gaza and the challenges being faced by the Palestinian people.

His Instagram account had over one million followers when it was suspended by Meta last March.

He has since started a new account on the platform: alhelou.y2
