The announcement of this year’s Oscar nominations has been delayed by two days because of the deadly wildfires raging in the Los Angeles area.
The announcement was initially scheduled for January 17th 2025, but will now be revealed on January 19th 2025.
The voting for the nearly 10,000 Academy members has also been extended by two days, until January 14th.
In a letter sent to members on Wednesday, Academy CEO Bill Kramer said: “We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”
Conan O’Brien is set to host the 2025 Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theater on Hollywood Boulevard on March 2nd 2025.
LA County Sheriff Robert Luna says the death toll from the fires are expected to rise as major blazes burn across the area, forcing thousands from their homes and ravaging communities.
Al Jazeera says JP Morgan has put forward an estimate that economic losses from the blazes could total as much as $50 billion, which would make them the costliest in US history.
