Oppenheimer actor read Bhagvadgita to prepare for role

Actor Cillian Murphy says he read the Bhagvadgita to prepare for one of his biggest Hollywood roles to date, the upcoming Christopher Nolan film ‘Oppenheimer’.

The Irish actor, known for his roles in the Netflix series ‘Peaky Blinders’ and other films such as 28 Days Later, Batman Begins and Inception said “I did read the Bhagavad Gita in preparation, and I thought it was an absolutely beautiful text, very inspiring. I think it was a consolation to him (Oppenheimer), he kind of needed it and it provided him a lot of consolation, all his life.” Murphy told Sucharita Tyagi in an interview.

‘Oppenheimer’ is based on the real-life theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons.

Oppenheimer was a student of the Sanskrit language and reportedly quoted from the Bhagvadgita, after successfully testing the first atomic bomb in the world. “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds,” he had said.
