NTA welcomes election observers, calls for Electoral Reform

The National Transformation Alliance is welcoming the recent announcement that CARICOM election observers will be invited for the upcoming General Election.

The party’s Political Leader Gary Griffith believes their presence will strengthen transparency, deter electoral misconduct, and ensure public confidence in the outcome.

At the same time however, he is calling for electoral reform to move away from the first-past-the-post system, which he believes to be outdated.

MR Griffith says the current system allows parties with fewer total votes to form governments, while third parties with significant voter support receive no representation.

As such, he believes the current system should be replaced with one that ensures every vote counts

Mr Griffith also took issue with the EBC’s practice of shifting polling stations into marginal constituencies, saying this continues to fuel suspicions of political bias.

He says there should instead be clear explanations for all movements to prevent perceptions of bias.
