Nikoli Edwards’ Progressive Party will not contest General Election

The Progressive Party led by Nikoli Edwards will not contest next month’s General Elections.

The party was formed in 2019, with Mr Edwards serving as its only candidate in the 2020 General Election for the constituency of San Fernando West.

This time around however, he says the party does not have the necessary resources to mount a competitive campaign.

Mr Edwards says the 2020 poll demonstrated that “electoral success is heavily dependent on financial resources”, and laments that regulations to help level the playing field have not been enacted.

He adds that without transparent and suitable financing, young people are often left with little choice but to join larger, established political parties.
