New Jersey Transit Rail strikes, thousands of commuters affected

The New Jersey Transit rail strike, the first in more than 40 years, is currently underway as engineers walked off the job after midnight.

In an effort to negotiate higher wages, the walkout comes after the latest negotiations did not produce an agreement between the agency and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

According to an ABC News report, the union says 450 members and trainees have gone without a raise for five years.

The strike affects more than 350,000 daily commuters in New Jersey and New York City who use the nation’s third-largest transit system.

The NJ Transit rail provides nearly 1 million weekday trips, including public transit routes between New York City’s Penn Station and New Jersey’s Newark airport.
