Naparima MP Rodney Charles has welcomed the Prime Minister’s recent hint at his possible retirement.
Over the weekend, Dr Rowley revealed that he was thinking of retirement, following his wife’s decision to retire last year.
In a statement, the Naparima MP says if true, the PM’s retirement would herald “a refreshingly new era in TT politics”.
He adds that “The younger generation of leaders must bring fresh ideas, possess impeccable integrity, and must have impressive qualifications in a wide range of professions buttressed by performance track records in the public/private sectors, academia or with NGOs. Above all they must represent a new breed of servant leaders.”
At the same time however, he was cautious of the retirement talk being just talk saying, “We can only hope this is not another political game of playing dead to catch corbeaux alive like his predecessor Eric Williams did in 1973.”
Last month, Mr Charles announced that he will not contest the 2025 General Election, and called on Dr Rowley to join him and make way for the younger generation.
