Mud volcano activity in Mayaro

Residents have been evacuated after mud volcano activity in Cascadoux Village, Mayaro.

Mayaro MP Rushton Paray says two vents have surfaced, with seepage initially at a diameter of approximately two feet.

He adds however that they have since expanded – they now measure about two feet in width and four feet in length.

Persons have also noted the intermittent release of gas.

Mr Paray says access to the immediate area has been restricted, while nearby residents have been safely relocated.

He says preparations have been made at the Mayaro Civic Center, which stands ready to serve as a shelter should the need arise.

Several agencies are now actively engaged, including the Disaster Management Unit, Municipal Police and Mayaro Fire Service.

A specialist from the UWI Volcano Unit will also conduct a comprehensive assessment.
