Concerns have been raised by Opposition MPs following the suspension of operations at the Point Lisas and Port of Spain Container Examination Stations.
According to reports, the decision has been made by the Customs and Excise Division due to ongoing infrastructural works.
It has reportedly implemented measures to maintain the pace of container examinations during the suspension period.
However, Oropouche West MP Dave Tancoo believes the suspension will harm Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
He criticized Customs for not providing more information on the extent of the shutdown on container throughput.
Meanwhile, Mayaro MP Rushton Paray believes this matter is rooted in neglect and oversight by the Finance Ministry.
He has called on government to reopen the facilities without delay, waive all storage and demurrage fees accrued by businesses during the closure and implement robust oversight.
