A call is being made for an investigation into the manner in which biohazard waste was disposed of by the SWRHA.
A newspaper claimed that waste had piled up for weeks near the San Fernando Hospital’s furnace but the SWRHA said the situation was under control and the waste was only there for some days.
The Authority also reported that it had decommissioned the furnace in favour of a new unit, which sterilises bacteria using steam.
However, Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe believes the SWRHA placed staff at a health risk by allowing the situation to arise.
He also raised questions about the reasons behind decommissioning of the furnace and called for the Health Minister to step in and probe the matter.
