MP urges early detection, treatment for severe dengue cases

Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe says things should be in place at the nation’s hospitals to detect and treat persons showing signs of dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.

Dr Bodoe, a former Chairman of the SWRHA, issued the call after the death of a 16-year-old Fyzabad student due to Dengue.

He says while the majority of persons who contract dengue may experience mild symptoms and recuperate without the need for significant medical attention, a small number may develop life threatening complications called dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.

He adds that early hospitalization and aggressive treatment can reduce the risk of death from these complications.

According to Dr Bodoe this will require the deployment of experienced medical and nursing staff in emergency departments, adequate resources for testing, sufficient platelet supplies to be made available, and timely access to ICU beds when required.

Citizens are also urged to be aware of the symptoms and signs of DHF/DSS.

The warning signs usually begin the first day or two after the fever goes away, and may include severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from gums or nose, bruising on the skin, difficult or rapid breathing, and fatigue.

Persons with dengue who experience such symptoms should seek urgent medical treatment.
