Flooding in Oropouche West following yesterday’s heavy rain was caused by inadequate maintenance and clearing works at major watercourses, according to the area’s MP.
Dave Tancoo says he has been pleading with government to address these matters and is urging the Ministers of Local Government and Works to get the job done before the next spate of bad weather.
Both the Coromata River and Oropouche River on the SS Erin Road broke its banks, making roads impassable for some.
MP Tancoo warns against trivializing the situation, adding that the flooding experienced by residents of Debe, Penal, Barrackpore, Woodland and environs is not the flash floods seen in other areas.
He says, “It is not too late. I am pleading with Ministers Sinanan and Al Rawi to use this small window of opportunity that we presently have to prioritize and complete the works that have been identified as critical, before the next set of inclement weather arrives.”
