The state owes T&TEC 1.4 billion dollars, and Opposition MP Barry Padarath believes this has contributed significantly to the financial woes the company is facing.

The process is ongoing to eventually raise the rates that all customers, including residential, with the RIC conducting that process.

Mr. Padarath believes citizens were being punished for the incompetence of the state to operate T&TEC efficiently, adding that the government must be compelled to pay the massive debt in the shortest order and not pass on the burden they have created to customers.

He said the figure of $1.4B in debt owed by the state as of May 31st 2023 was confirmed via an answer given to a question he filed in the Parliament.

The MP has called on the RIC to pay attention to this bit of information now placed in the public domain.
