An MP believes T&T national security “has collapsed” after the Prime Minister said the boat involved in an oil spill in Tobago is of unknown origin.
During a site visit over the weekend, PM Dr Keith Rowley said the spill, which started last week near Canoe Bay, is a “national emergency.”
According to reports, he also added that officials have no idea where the vessel came from and stated that processes have been activated to pinpoint those details.
However, MP Dave Tancoo says the inability to provide details about the vessel’s origins is a “shameless admission of failure.”
He adds, “The absence of accountability and detailed information regarding the incident is alarming. It is critical to question how a ship with unknown intentions and cargo was able to enter our waters unchallenged, potentially carrying illegal drugs, arms, ammunition, or illegal fuel.”
MP Tancoo is calling for immediate and transparent action from government to rectify what he is dubbing “security lapses.”
