MP criticizes injunction against port workers

The recent injunction ordering port employees to return to work is being described as “high-handed” and “undemocratic” by Couva South MP Rudy Indarsingh.

The injunction was granted to the Port Authority by the Industrial Court, after workers repeatedly failed to report for duty in the midst of ongoing wage negotiations.

Mr Indarsingh believes the injunction is “an attempt to deflect from the real source of failure” which is the Port Authority’s inability to achieve a satisfactory outcome to negotiations.

He adds that it does nothing to resolve the impasse but may instead further frustrate workers at a commercially critical time in the port’s operations.

According to reports, the interim injunction will be in place until January 15th 2025, which is the date of the next hearing.
