Member of Parliament for St. Augustine, Ms. Khadijah Ameen is once again expressing her concern over the increase in criminal activity in the St. Augustine Constituency. The MP stated that there have been multiple incidents of bandits roaming the streets, burglaries and even murder where outside parties came into the community to commit the crimes. The MP has been working with the police, by facilitating Police Council meetings with the public as well as creating neighborhood watch groups and WhatsApp group chats. The MP says that she reached out to the Minister of National Security and the Commissioner of Police on multiple occasions yet they continue to be unresponsive while constituents of St. Augustine remain ‘sitting ducks’. MP Ameen says that citizens are forced to take action into their own hands to protect themselves due to the failure of the Government through these watch groups.
The St. Augustine MP commented on the recent incident where a homeowner allegedly used his license firearm to open fire on intruders during a home invasion in Freeman Road, St. Augustine, killing one and injuring another. She says that despite not knowing the circumstance of the incident, it appears that the owner was able to defend himself with his license firearm which is an example of when the UNC speaks about giving citizens the opportunity to defend themselves, their homes and their communities due to the failure of the Government to prevent crime from happening.
