Opposition MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal believes a specialised unit is needed in the Police Service to deal with extortion of businessman by gangs.
His comments on the Newsday come after the murder of Enterprise businessman Kelvin Mohammed, whose family believes he may have been killed for refusing to pay protection money.
Dr. Moonilal says there are increasing reports in the country about gangsters extorting monthly sums from business owners in return for not murdering or kidnapping them.
He says police with specialised training are needed, along with amended laws to create a special offence titled “extortion by gang members” which should carry a penalty of significant jail time.
