MP calls for more to address bullying

Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes Alleyne says recurrent challenges in addressing bullying are: a lack of action by school administrators and the unavailability of student support resources.

In a statement following the suicide of a 15-year-old student, Mrs Haynes Alleyne says she has met with several families seeking assistance to address bullying in schools.

She adds, “Unfortunately, recurrent challenges include the lack of action taken by school administrators and the unavailability of student support resources. This is why I continue to advocate for a stronger Student Support Services Division.”

The MP pointed to efforts by the student’s family to have this issue addressed and says the lack of impactful intervention from Form 1 to Form 4 shows that the existing policies and level of response were insufficient.

She says there must be the introduction of emotional regulation and conflict resolution skills, as well as the creation of safe spaces in each school for students to seek refuge in the event of bullying, threats or worry for their safety.

She also called for a strict no-tolerance bullying policy which ensures offenders face consequences for their actions.
