Mayaro MP Rushton Paray is backing a call for home invasion to be recognized as a distinct criminal offence, with harsher penalties.
The sentiment was expressed recently by ACP Wayne Mystar, who reportedly said invading someone’s home is not just a violation of property, but also a violation of that person’s right to safety, security, and sanctity in their homes.
Mr Paray agrees, saying the current laws fail to adequately address what is a growing threat.
He believes in 2025 Parliament should:
1. Classify Home Invasion as a Specific Crime:
- Clearly define it as unlawful entry into a home with the intent to commit or commission of a violent crime while residents are present.
2. Establish Severe Penalties
- Up to 25 years imprisonment upon conviction.
- Life imprisonment for cases involving firearms, weapons, or explosives.
3. Recognize Aggravating Factors:
- Enhanced sentences for violence, targeting vulnerable groups (children or elderly), or significant property damage.
4. Provide Support for Victims:
- Courts should mandate restitution and allow for enhanced security measures at victims’ homes.
5. Close Legal Loopholes:
- Punish conspiracies, attempts, and accomplices involved in home invasions with equal severity.
He is also urging to demand immediate legislative action to protect their homes and families.
