More Dengue cases confirmed, no additional deaths

The number of confirmed Dengue cases has increased, however there have been no additional deaths.

In its first update for October, the Health Ministry says there are 1,802 lab confirmed cases and 19 lab confirmed deaths.

Also, as at October 18th 2024, a total of 1,324 yellow fever notices have been issued to property owners/occupiers, directing them to clean up their surroundings.

Of these, 81 have so far been identified for the consideration/institution of legal proceedings for non-compliance.

The public is reminded that Dengue Fever may be spread by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Symptoms appear within 5-6 days of being bitten, last for 1-2 weeks and can include:

  • Fever
  • Headaches (sometimes severe)
  • Pain behind eyes
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Skin rash
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

The Ministry adds that persons with symptoms should not use aspirin, motrin, cataflam, olfen or ibuprofen, as these can cause bleeding which leads to shock.

They are instead advised to use paracetamol, acetaminophen (Panadol/Tylenol) or medicines prescribed by a doctor.
