MoH: monitoring of respiratory viruses continues

The Health Ministry says it is continuing to monitor the spread of respiratory illnesses.

This includes hMPV, which it reminds is not a new virus and has been detected worldwide as early as 2001.

A report from PAHO also states that while China CDC surveillance data for the week of December 23rd to 29th 2024 showed a continued rise in acute respiratory infections, the overall scale and intensity of these infections remained lower than during the same period in 2023.

According to the WHO, hMPV causes symptoms similar to the common cold or an upper respiratory infection.

The Ministry adds that hMPV is not a notifiable disease in T&T at this time.
