Health Ministry denies shortage of cancer treatment drugs

The Health Ministry is denying claims that shortages are always being reported with regard to cancer drugs.

The claim reportedly came from Dr Asante Le Blanc, head of the T&T Cancer Society, during a Joint Select Committee sitting.

The Ministry insists that oncology drugs are available, with no shortage of chemotherapy infusion pharmaceuticals.

It says for the period 2021 to 2023, approximately $245 millionwas spent on cancer treatment drugs, with this expenditure projected to continue from 2023 to 2025, for all cancer drugs.

It adds that T&T’s public healthcare system provides free chemotherapy and radiation therapy services for patients at the Cancer Centre of Trinidad and Tobago, while radiation therapy is provided at the Southern Medical Clinic and the Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Centre.
