Ministry urged to take responsibility for Cunjal River

Chairman of the Princes Town Regional Corporation, Gowrie Roopnarine, is calling on the Works Ministry to take responsibility for dredging the Cunjal River.

There was significant flooding along Cunjal Road in Barrackpore this morning following early morning showers.

Mr Roopnarine told 103.1FM News that while the Corporation did undertake some minor work on that waterway, it actually falls under the purview of the Ministry.

In particular, he says work needs to be done to address bottlenecks that affect the flow of water.

This morning’s flooding in Barrackpore impacted a number of homes and Mr Roopnarine says there several reports of lost livestock.

Meanwhile in Moruga, five families lost household items after waters invaded their homes.

The weather in the area remains bleak at this time, and there are fears of more flooding if the rains return this afternoon.

Parts of Penal/Debe also experienced flooding this morning.

Corporation Chairman Gowtam Maharaj was out and about with councillors this morning, taking stock of the impact.
