Ministry “actively addressing” reports of elder abuse

The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services is “actively addressing” reports of elder abuse.

According to Minister Vandana Mohit, the Division of Ageing is investigating several incidents highlighted on social media, as well as direct reports made to the Older Persons Information Centre.

These cases involve various forms of abuse – including financial exploitation, physical harm, and psychological mistreatment – and incidents occurring within homes for senior citizens.

She adds that the Division is working closely with key stakeholders, such as the Police Service and the Ministry of Health to ensure thorough investigations and appropriate follow-up actions.

Members of the public are also urged to report any suspected cases of elder abuse by contacting the Older Persons Information Centre at 800-OPIC (800-6742).
