Ministers talk regional animal health, food safety systems

Several Government Ministers have underscored the importance of a strategic collaboration to strengthen regional animal health and food safety systems.

Speaking at the CARICOM Committee of Chief Veterinary Officers 25th Anniversary yesterday, Agriculture Minister Kazim Hosein warned that persons who engage in animal smuggling will be subject to the full brunt of the law.

He added that these actions threaten food systems, animal and public health, and says the Ministry is developing systems for a quicker response to disease outbreaks, negotiating trade agreements and delivering local produce to the country.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh emphasised the importance of adopting a One Health approach across the region.

He says this will address complex health challenges, adding that an integrated collaboration between sectors can better achieve what no sector can achieve alone.

Also speaking at the event was Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Amery Browne, who reiterated the importance of the Chief Veterinary Officers’ roles in regional success.

He reminded that pathogens do no operate in silos and encouraged regional collaboration to analyse wildlife and animal products.
