Minister urges vigilance as some river levels remain elevated

Persons, especially those living near major watercourses, are being urged to remain alert.

This comes from Local Government Minister Khadijah Ameen, as  river levels continue to pose a risk of localized riverine flooding across various parts of the country.

Ms Ameen is urging caution, even as some areas begin to see floodwaters subside.

According to the Minister, data from stream flow monitoring stations indicate that several rivers remain at elevated levels, including the Caroni Bamboo, El Carmen River, Caroni Tumpuna, Manuel Congo, and Cunupia River.

Of particular concern is the Caroni River, which continues to rise, though at a slowing rate.

High tide is expected at approximately 8:42PM, after which water levels are expected to gradually recede.

While widespread riverine flooding is not anticipated at this time, the Ministry is warning that the threat of localized flooding remains present in the coming hours.

Ms Ameen says joint operations with the Ministry of Works and Transport are ongoing to ensure flood pumps are functioning continuously.

She is also concerned about communities located near eroded riverbanks, where the risk of overflow remains high.

The public is urged to stay vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect life and property.
