Minister denies claims that Gasparillo school was structurally unsafe

Following protests over the poor infrastructure at the Gasparillo Secondary School, the Minister of Education says the structure is safe.

In the Parliament on Friday, Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly said there were no signs the infrastructure was structurally compromised, and therefore not collapsing.

She also noted that repairs are actively ongoing at the 39-year-old school with some critical work done during the vacation, including the roof and ceiling, among other things.

Newsday reported that last Friday, parents who were part of a protest at the school, said the roof needed repair, with missing ceiling tiles, collapsing beams, falling stairwell, faulty white boards and decaying desks.

Opposition MP Anita Haynes, commented on the Minister’s response and on social media noted “Not only is the Minister attempting to minimise a very serious issue of physical safety on the school compound, she has made no commitment to ensure this matter is treated with urgency.”
