Angelo Mathews says the actions of opposition captain Shakib Al Hasan and the Bangladesh team were “disgraceful”, as he accused them of stooping low in their appeal for his wicket today.
Shakib asked for a “timed out” dismissal against Mathews after the Sri Lankan veteran came out to bat but paused after the strap on his helmet broke.
The ICC’s playing conditions stipulate that the new batter must be “ready to receive the ball” within two minutes of a dismissal.
According to Cricinfo, the helmet strap broke about one minute and 55 seconds after the previous wicket fell, with the appeal coming three minutes and 20 seconds after.
Mathews insisted, “It was equipment malfunction. It was a safety issue as well. We know that without a helmet I can’t face the bowling.”
When asked about the incident after the match, Shakib simply stressed that “rules are rules”.
According to commentator Ian Bishop, the umpires gave Shakib two opportunities to withdraw the appeal, but Shakib refused.
Bangladesh went on to win the match by 3 wickets.
