Massy Stores has issued a statement after a union representing its workers raised questions about the termination of nine employees.
According to reports, the Contractors and General Workers Trade Union wants to know why nine single mothers were retrenched.
OWTU Chief Education and Research Officer, Ozzie Warwick, speaking at a union media conference, also questioned the move, noting that Massy has recorded profits.
In a statement, Massy Stores says a difficult decision was made after careful consideration, an extensive review of its operations and dialogue with the union.
It notes that efforts are being made to ensure the affected persons are supported, with work already started to identify other employment opportunities both internally and externally.
