Mas band removes temple’s name from website

Spirit Mas has removed its website reference to a local Hindu Temple.

Over the weekend, President of the Dattatreya Yoga Centre, Ramesh Persad Maharaj criticized the decision to mention the Temple’s name in a description for a section in the band’s 2025 offering.

The description initially read: “Dattatreya is a tri-faced God who is a representation of the ever powerful trinity. In Trinidad, the Dattatreya Temple holds the largest murti of Hanuman beyond the shores of India. TREYA’s sumptuous golds, peaches and pinks honour our monumental and crucial link to Indo-Caribbean history.”

Speaking with 103.1FM News, Mr Persad Maharaj said the mention was offensive to the Temple’s devotees, adding that they were not consulted in any way by the band.

An adjustment has since been made on the website, with the description now reading: “Inspired by the stories and journeys of those who came before us. A tribute to the culture and colours of our forefathers. TREYA’s sumptuous golds, peaches and pinks honour our monumental and crucial link to Indo-Caribbean history.”

The decision to remove the Dattatreya name from the website is being welcomed by Mr Persad Maharaj, who said it would help to “preserve the spirituality and dignity of the Temple”.

103.1FM News also tried to contact Spirit Mas regarding this latest development, albeit unsuccessfully.

The band’s overall 2025 presentation is described as “an ode to the attractions and allure of Trinidad and Tobago.”
