Many pay respects at funeral of Dr Deokinanan Sharma

The funeral of former NCIC President Dr Deokinanan Sharma took place over the weekend.

According to the NCIC, many came to pay respects on Sunday at the Nagar to a man who served his community and nation with great humility and genuine dedication.

Sending condolences via Facebook, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said Dr Sharma is an iconic figure, deserving of his accolades.

UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Dr Sharma was a pioneer and pillar of national culture, and a great nation-builder.

Dr Sharma passed away on August 23rd at the age of 87.

He was a longtime member of the NCIC and was awarded the Hummingbird Medal (Gold) for his loyal and distinguished service to the nation.

In 2012, the University of the West Indies awarded Dr. Sharma the Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD), Honoris Causa for his strong nationalistic tendencies while pursuing love of culture and community and for his sterling contribution to society.
