Police in Malaysia have rescued 402 children and teenagers they believe were physically and sexually abused in 20 care homes.
Police Inspector-General Razarudin Husain said the victims are between the ages of one and 17.
171 suspects between the ages of 17 and 64 have been arrested, including religious teachers and caretakers.
Inspector-General Razarudin told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday that the suspects would allegedly touch the children, claiming it was part of a religious treatment.
He added that some were taught to perform acts on other children, and children would be punished with heated metal objects.
The victims will be temporarily housed at a police centre in Kuala Lumpur and will undergo health checks.
