Lee strengthens, Tropical Depression Fourteen forms

Lee is expected to become a major hurricane later today.

According to the National Hurricane Centre, maximum sustained winds have increased to near 165 km/h, with rapid intensification expected today and tonight.

Hurricane Lee continues to move west-northwest over the Atlantic.

On the forecast track, the centre of this system is expected to move north of the northern Leeward islands over the next few days.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, however, the NHC says swells generated by Lee are expected to reach portions of the Lesser Antilles on Friday, and reach the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Bahamas, and Bermuda this weekend.

These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

The TTMS also underscores that this system poses no immediate threat to T&T.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Fourteen has formed in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic.

This system is located in the vicinity of the Cabo Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest.

Gradual strengthening is expected during the next several days, and the depression is forecast become a tropical storm later today or tonight.
